Anti-Christian Incumbent Judges Overwhelmingly Defeated in the Largest Counties in Florida
TAMPA -/ When Christian political groups and Values Voters unite, big things happen. In South Florida voters convincingly confirmed the growing influence of South Florida's Christian vote by electing attorney Stephen Millan to a Circuit Judgeship in what was seen as a huge victory against anti-Christian judges. Millan won with more votes than any other candidate in South Florida, a total of 98,422 votes cast, when he handily beat the incumbent. Milan was endorsed by United Christians of Florida – Political Action Committee on their popular www.UnitedChristiansOfFlorida.com website and was determined to be “CFC-Qualified” by the Miami-based Christian Family Coalition.
Incumbent Circuit Court judge Fleur Jeannine Lobree proudly accepted the endorsement of a homosexual activist group and was dealt a humiliating defeat. It was the very group that recently brought a lawsuit against Florida’s 2008 voter-approved Constitutional “One man, one woman” initiative that supported traditional marriage. "There's a lesson to be learned here. Seeking support from South Florida's Christian community clearly pays off. On the other hand, incumbents that engage in explicit or implicit discriminatory attacks against the Christian community, either by accepting support of anti-Christian extremist groups or by belittling and demeaning a candidate's Christian faith, will be rejected by voters," points out Christian Family Coalition (CFC) Florida Founder and Executive Director Anthony Verdugo.
The most negative judicial race in South Florida pitted CFC-Qualified and United Christians of Florida recommended attorney John Patrick Contini, against incumbent Broward Circuit Judge Steven Feren. In this campaign, Feren decided to attack Contini's Christian faith calling him a "religious bigot." Voters threw Feren out of office, in a race where incumbent judges are rarely defeated by a new-comer.
In Hillsborough County, judicial candidate John Dingfelter was solidly defeated in a three-way competition and will not continue on to the General Election runoff race. Dingfelter was well remembered by the line of Tampa and Hillsborough County pastors who stood before Dingfelter asking him to vote against a Tampa city ordinance that would allow any man who merely claimed to be a woman to enter a Ladies Restroom and use the facility. An valiant effort was made by Terry Kemple and his Hillsborough based Community Issues Council to speak against this ill-conceived local law. Regardless of the many pastors pleading to protect families, protect ladies and especially the young unsuspecting female children, Dingfelter helped to pass the perverted ordinance that still stands to this day. However, he will not have a leg to stand on in the next judicial election.
The Christian Family Coalition, Florida Family Policy Council, United Christians of Florida – Political Action Committee and many other Christian activist groups are already educating and informing voters for the 2014 General Election. At www.UnitedChristiansOfFlorida.com volunteers will once again feature top-to-bottom of the ballot, county-by-county voting recommendations targeted to assist as many as 97% of the voters in the state of Florida.
Coast Guard Ordered To Stay In Port And Allow Infiltration
MIAMI - / Drugs, weapons, illegal aliens all are welcome under a new directive consistent with a federal government trying to destroy a nation, from within. There is alarm and grave concern about what is considered an ongoing, emergency situation with the U.S. Coast Guard, which is now an agency under our well-funded U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
By directive from on high, starting last Monday, 29 April 2013 (barring emergency calls) Coast Guard District 7, which stretches from the Carolinas to Alabama, has been restricted from activity - no enforcement patrols of large or small craft are allowed in our territorial seas, district-wide.
This means that, of several hundred craft available, neither the close-in enforcement operations (out to 20-nautical miles) nor the larger, blue water enforcement craft – cutters and the like – are actively engaged in protecting our shoreline. All such operations have ceased; no fuel is to be used to protect our shores, at least in District 7. All vessels are confined to port, and personnel are standing around, passing the time onshore. Emergency rescue and limited air operations still continue.
To put a perspective on this: an average Coast Guard small boat, for example, is a light, maneuverable outboard-equipped craft capable of quickly answering calls for detaining, boarding and inspecting vessels close to shore. They look for drugs, human trafficking, and weapons – including nuclear devices – which, incidentally when (not if) found are disarmed or turned over to the U.S. Navy bomb disposal units (scuttled in place).
Such a boat might interdict 50 craft per watch, or shift. That’s hundreds of boarding's, scores of bad guys, and tons of contraband and worse - every watch, of every day, over thousands of miles of our coastline – that are not happening.
From the founding, one of the few, now-forgotten enumerated, limited powers/duties of the federal government is to protect the nation. If there was a desire to “create” a good emergency for selfish interests at expense of someone else’s life, limb and liberty, then do exactly what somebody’s been not doing in District 7 all week. Think any Congressmen will bother to query the other Coast Guard operational districts (perhaps even including our lakes and river ways),to see if the same shocking story is true?
What’s more: Jacksonville, FL is home port to three of the U.S. Navy’s incredibly powerful nuclear submarines, as well as many surface ships. Until this week, (following the devastatingly successful small boat attack on the defenseless U.S.S. Cole), a Coast Guard small craft escort was provided to all such important assets as they made their way in and out of port.
As of Monday, this escort is
no longer provided!
Whether this enforcement hiatus is only for a few days, or for months, an inestimable threat is thus enabled unopposed access to our precious land (as are our porous, criminally undefended land borders,) without hindrance. Pure inexcusable, suicidal insanity.
No one wants to see our President informing us from his teleprompter about what measures he has heroically directed in response to a cowardly WMD surprise attack within our borders.
Typically we call the government flaks (sorry –“ officials”) for comment. But these days we have entirely too much comment, and very little action to show for it. This is urgent.
NOTE: If you have grave concerns about what you’ve seen that is going unreported – whether you’re in law enforcement, our military, our government, or just as a watchful citizen, you need a safe place to go. Do the right thing. Please email: editor@newstimesjournal.com Then, by all means call your local media and your congressman and demand some answers. Are we "inviting" invaders of some type or is this merely more sequester nonsense?
We won’t track you or turn over information to third parties. Just make sure your claims are 100% valid and don’t reveal sensitive details that might endanger others’ lives. We’ll get the word out.
Our niche in this crazy world is to give a voice to the voiceless, who otherwise cannot gain access to the arrogant, preoccupied kingdom of mass media. Getting serious time on a national talk show or website is impossible. They usually have their own agenda in mind anyway, despite the truth. With our international footprint, it will be safe and effective for you to be the “watchman on the wall” for the preservation of our fragile liberty.

Boehner's Biggest Betrayal - Should Be His Last As Speaker
Are there ANY True Patriots remaining in Congress?
Apparently, when John Boehner goes into private negotiations with President Obama and Senate Leadership it is to cut the throat of conservatives and the American people. All done behind closed doors, of course. That is exactly what happened tonight as Boehner, the RepubliCon Speaker from Ohio, brought Senate originated "Fiscal Cliff" legislation to the US House for a vote that relied totally upon the loyalty of socialist Demonrats in Congress to pass. Granted, they needed a mere minority of fellow RepubliCons to officially break one of the Republican Party's primary 2012 Election planks of - NO new taxes.
"Tonight is one of the lowest points that Republicans have ever had," decried Fox News contributor Charles Krauthammer, "...look how much (the President/Democrats) gained tonight and they gave away - nothing!"
In return, the Republicans got absolutely NO spending cuts. Which might cause someone to ask if anybody tried to actually, "negotiate." Instead said one observer, "Boehner must believe that the fictional "Fiscal Cliff" was a real ledge that might cause him fall and spill his cocktail or drop his cigarette," shared Larry Moore a leader with Tea Party Next Step, "so he actually brought to the floor a bill that relied upon 172 Demonrats and 85 RepubliCons to pass. 167 Republican Congressmen voted against it, along with 16 Democrats and even those votes are packed full of ulterior motives and falsehood."
All of this insanity leaves us with three questions; Whose side is John Boehner on anyway? Is Boehner the most powerful Republican to represent conservatives and Republicans leading up to the 2014 Elections? Are there ANY True Patriots remaining in Congress?
While everyone thinks that in the first day of the new congressional session on January 3, 2013 John Boehner will be swept back into the Speakers chair, his future actually rests with a potent - minority - of principled True Patriots in Congress. The only question is how many are there? It would only take 17 True Patriots to stop the madness, since it would take 218 of the 234 newly elected Congressional representatives to elect a new Speaker of the House. That leaves the question, are there 17 individuals who value principle above politics? Will they wisely use their leverage in this modern day war for the soul and future of America? Are they all actually moral cowards?
Perhaps, tonight we got some insight into what is going on behind closed doors as House Majority Leader, Eric Cantor and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy were "allowed" to symbolically vote against Boehner and his masterpiece of betrayal. Could it be - that the powers that be, now see Boehner as a progressive martyr who can never again rally the loyal opposition and Cantor and McCarthy as suitable replacements? Only George Soros the multi-billionaire mastermind of evil really knows at this point.
So we are really left with one question; Are there 17 or more principled True Patriots left in the US House that will demand that the US Constitution be protected and defended against the ongoing - treasonous - attack. Are there 17 True Patriots that will demand investigations and impeachment hearings if determined appropriate for Benghazi, Fast 'N Furious (free machine guns given to drug smugglers debacle), Vote Buying Schemes (FREE Obama Phones for Votes), Voter Fraud in Illinois, Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio California, etc., for Green Energy Company/Government Grant fraud, etc., etc., etc.
Are there any True Patriots in the US House of Representatives? If so, prove it!
A True Patriot of America is a principled citizen. They will act in a manner consistent with the Holy Bible, as presented by their Creator God and modeled by Christ their Savior and Lord. They will make decisions and take actions that are the best interest of their family - now, AND in their future. They will make certain that the original intent of our US Constitution is truly preserved, protected and defended. Finally, they will value their vocation, their contribution to society as provided through their inalienable rights, and the proven power of real free-market, principled capitalism. In this proper order, this foundation provides the perfect balance for all decision making.
It is no different for our elected members of Congress. Yet, they are different from the remaining community of fellow citizens. They have been granted the title of leadership. Some would say by hard work and earning it. Some would say by accepting the responsibility of servant leadership. Some would say by being an effective political hack, a team player and an unprincipled compromiser.
Tonight, an unprincipled compromiser will have a new nickname and will forever be called "Boehner," much like even still today we would call someone a "Benedict Arnold," if they deserved it.
Brash NEW Republican Leadership To Favor A Modified Rich Surtax?
WASHINGTON D.C. - / News Times Journal / - After being shut out of meetings with the Obama Administration and stripped of GOP leadership positions, discussions of a NEW Republican Leadership team are gaining firm roots. Conservatives elected to Congress are not only feeling like they are continuing to be set-up, but increasingly taken for granted and now shut-out of what are surely smoke-filled back rooms (Obama, Boehner meetings) with plenty of Chicago-style deals being made.
Recently, conservative Congressman Justin Amash (Rep. MI) wisely commented about designated Speaker John Boehner, "I wouldn't be surprised if his actions have caused him to be a little more concerned about negotiations and the kind of damage he might do to his own political situation if he negotiates a bad deal," says Michigan Republican Rep. Justin Amash.
Even the progressive-socialist/communist Congressman (Dem. MD) Chris Van Hollen, gave his opinion, "I am getting increasingly concerned that one of the reason's the Speaker is going to string out these discussions is that he wants to wait until Jan. 3 when the election for speaker takes place," Van Hollen shared over a breakfast with reporters. "People should understand we could get this done if the Speaker was willing to bring a bill to the floor of the House — a bill that did not necessarily get the majority of Republican votes."
That is right, Boehner, betray your "loyal" Republican dupes with some of that, "I will have more flexibility after my election," philosophy that apparently wins elections, ala Obama's Hot Mic conversations with the Russians. After all, the wheels have been greased on the Progressive Republican Leadership railroad, with a preliminary Republican Member Caucus meeting already held and a hearty preliminary voice vote in favor of two more years of Speaker Boehner sound bites and narrative gifting compromises. Sure, members spent 17-seconds pondering a hasty and unplanned nomination of Newt Gingrich by Louie Gohmert (Rep. TX) that proved a point, but got no second offered to advance his nomination. MEMO to Louie: Quit thinking for yourself, quit doing that, "representing your constituents thing - on behalf of the nation" and get your bobble-head back into the Potomac River line. That is how we career politicians stay here and stay comfortable being here. END of Memo
So, it should be - no surprise - that those who care about the fundamental principles of the Republican brand - want no surprises. Very quietly, plans are being made to simply insist that John Boehner will not continue to serve as Speaker of the House and that he be replaced with someone to be named, once Boehner comes to the realization that his days of clumsy bargaining and foot-shooting deal making are over. It takes 218 votes to elect a new Speaker of the House and a mere 20 True Patriot members, standing firm is enough to win a modern day, closed door, revolutionary war - without firing a shot. "It will be Boehner's decision on whether to save himself the historical embarrassment of losing the official Speaker vote in the first day of 2013 action and be able to write the final chapter on his Leadership legacy," shared one organizer, confidentially.
A seasoned career bureaucrat serving as Chief of Staff for a retiring Republican Congressman, stated, "the last thing we need is for the Republican members of Congress to be divided...that is just what the Democrats would like to see happen." He is right. That should not happen, and Boehner and his hand-picked clan of futuristic RepubliCons (spelling intentional), should peacefully step aside in favor of a display of public unity.
Let the NEW the planning begin, and believe it or not, some NEW thinking might be to actually give Obama what he wants (plus a whole lot more) when Obama said, "but what people really want is fairness. They want people paying their fair share of taxes." "All I'm saying is that those who have done well, including me, should pay their fair share in taxes." "Do we want to keep giving tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans like me, or Warren Buffett, or Bill Gates – people who don’t need them and never asked for them? Or do we want to keep investing in things that will grow our economy and keep us secure? Because we can’t afford to do both." - Barack Obama, 44th President, 2007, 2011, 2012.
Since Obama, Gates and Buffett among others have made it clear how they feel, how about proposing a Rich Democrat/Socialist Surtax? It would work like this, respective to tax year 2013, if you were registered as a Democrat or Socialist in 2012 and according to the Democratic and Socialist Platforms (which support tax increased for the rich) your taxes should go up, per your wishes. NEW Leadership Republicans might well favor legislation that the top 20% of all Democrat and Socialist income earners pay a Rich Democrat/Socialist Surtax and that some ratio of that tax, both, pay down the soaring national debt and go toward the, "social services budget." Yes, sorry, but the term "budget" is mandatory. Then, the next 45% of all Democrat income earners will have the (check-box) option of dedicating their Rich Democrat/Socialist Surtax to national debt, social services budgets or both. In fact, any socialist minded tax-payer, regardless of party affiliation should be allowed to, "opt-in." That leaves the bottom 55%, (known as the middle-class and poor) and everyone else registered to a political party favoring private, individual wealth, to keep on working building businesses, creating jobs and voting for the very best elected officials available.
So, Obama and loyalist get what they want - and more of it! The NEW Republican Leadership gets what they see as a solid plan for the future of a great nation and the survival of the Grand NEW Party (GOP, rest in peace). Finally, this NEW Leadership tax concession should give some political leverage to the real problem - SPENDING. Everyone is happy except, perhaps, a teary-eyed John Boehner, because elections have consequences. Even closed door, hasty, greasy tracked Republican Member Caucus elections...have consequences.
EDITORS NOTE: More creative fresh approaches to come on the NEW Republican Leadership initiatives - it gets even better...
The Tampa-Bay Times Outrageously Says “Yes”
Tampa, FL – / News Times Journal / – It is not shocking that the Tampa Bay Times would oppose Florida Constitutional Amendment 8 – the Religious Freedom Amendment. The paper’s opposition to common sense center-right policies is legendary.
But the paper’s editorial board’s breathtaking pronouncement – that “Florida’s Blaine Amendment was born of anti-Catholic bigotry, but it has served a more noble purpose.” – is deeply offensive – not only to people of all religions, but to anyone who belongs to a group that has ever been the target of bigoted policies.
Today the Tampa Bay Times acknowledged that the provision in the Florida Constitution that Amendment 8 seeks to repeal is rooted in anti-Catholic bigotry – yet they write that it serves a ‘noble purpose’ – nothing could be more scandalous or hypocritical,” said Frank Murphy, director of communications, Diocese of St. Petersburg.
“Today the Tampa Bay Times acknowledged that the provision in the Florida Constitution that Amendment 8 seeks to repeal is rooted in anti-Catholic bigotry – yet they write that it serves a ‘noble purpose’ – nothing could be more scandalous or hypocritical,” said Frank Murphy, director of communications, Diocese of St. Petersburg. “Bigotry is simply never acceptable, regardless of the outcome,” said Murphy. “The end never justifies the means when any aspect of bigotry – racial or religious – is brought to bear.”
“If any center-right organization or politician proposed a policy rooted in bigotry because it had a ‘noble purpose,’ the Times would make it their mission to drive that voice from the public square. For the Times to show tolerance for relics of bigotry demonstrates how closely they are linked with so-called “progressive” interests who think it’s OK for government to discriminate against those of faith who provide secular services to the public,” said Mike Hill, director, Citizens for Religious Freedom and Non-Discrimination and former member of the Florida Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
The Blaine Amendment failed to become part of the U.S. Constitution after the Civil War, but the irrational and bigoted thinking behind it did find its way into 37 state constitutions. Its primary purpose was to discriminate against Catholics and in Florida to discriminate against African –Americans, a fact no serious legal scholar denies.
Amendment 8 will right this wrong and eliminate discrimination against all churches and religious institutions, which provide social services to Floridians – no matter their religious affiliations or beliefs. Amendment 8 will, in fact, preserve the hundreds of public-private partnerships between government and social service organizations potentially in jeopardy because of lawsuits invoking the Blaine Amendment. During the past several years, state government has contracted for nearly $400 million worth of services from organizations of faith.
Contrary to opponent’s claims, Amendment 8 would not undermine public education through vouchers. Vouchers remain unconstitutional and nothing in Amendment 8 addresses schools. The amendment also has no effect on the state establishment clause, free exercise clause and public morals clause.
“However, these other opposition arguments simply pale in comparison to the Times position that bigotry is OK if the purpose is noble,” said Hill.
"FREE Obama Phones for Votes" Scheme Earns An FEC Complaint
WASHINGTON,
/ NewsTimesJournal / -- A Complaint was filed on Tuesday with the
Federal Elections Commission, in Washington, DC, outlining how the
Obama Administration, the Obama Campaign, and ultimately President
Obama perverted federal law and created the "FREE Obama Phones for
Votes" scheme. Using an old law passed in the 1980's for a
well intended program called Lifeline, the original purpose was to
help residents of distant rural communities to get landline phone
service with an interest in aiding them with emergency and
health-centered needs. At least that is how it functioned
until the Obama Administration got the idea that it could use
Lifeline to extort extra service fees from current cell phone
customers and link it with other welfare programs to instantly
qualify millions of potential voters for an additional welfare
program. That is right, IF you are a current recipient
of one of a number of federal welfare payouts, you are entitled to
a FREE Obama Phone cell phone, 250 FREE minutes each month and text
messaging, plus more free minutes by signing up others to get their
FREE Obama Phones.
"This in your face corruption
of government, perversion of law and stealing from the average cell
phone customer through regulatory fees is just another example of
what happens when you elect socialist thugs to public office," said
Mike Nelis, Executive Director of True Patriots of America who
filed the Complaint on behalf of its membership. "Now if you
want to call your local drug dealer for another fix, make a quick
Obama campaign contribution by texting, or perhaps make calls on
behalf of the Obama regime, you can NOW do so at tax-payer
expense." Nelis concluded by saying, "Enough is enough, it is
time to bring these Obama Administration thieves to justice.
We are encouraging other outraged citizens to sign up
at www.TruePatriotsOfAmerica.com and
take a stand!"
Surprisingly, the Obama
Administration has never tried to condemn the website
www.ObamaPhone.net, or the web site that it is linked to that
provides information on how to apply for the FREE Obama Phone and
service, www.FreeGovernmentCellPhones.net . Instead, the President
has received the credit for - some might even testify promoted -
the expanded welfare program under the guise of trying to help the
poor find employment, etc. The end result is that the Obama
Campaign has had four years to grow this "FREE Obama Phones for
Votes" scandal from a legitimate $772 million program to a $1.6
billion plus annual government give-away where Obama votes are
purchased from those faithfully signing up, who are even rewarded
for recruiting others to get their own FREE Obama
Phones.
Nelis adds, "The Federal
Election Commission can surely connect the dots and when they do
they will find Obama Campaign contribution bundlers, as well as
foreign interests, that are promoting and profiting from the
extortion of Americans through our cell phone bills and modern day
'taxation without representation.' All this cleverly schemed
to create Obama supporters, get them registered to vote,
communicate with them, enlist volunteers, pitch for small campaign
contributions, and turn them out to vote. All done with the
subtle undertones, if not blatant follow-up calls saying: "YOU owe
Obama for your free stuff, and to keep your free stuff YOU must
make sure Obama is re-elected!"
Democrats and Planned Parenthood Compare
Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan to STD's at Democratic
National Convention
WASHINGTON, /Christian
Newswire/ -- Planned Parenthood was passing out condoms inside a
pink cover which had this message on the front; "Protect Yourself
from Romney & Ryan."
The condoms were being passed
out to Democrat delegates, inside the security perimeter at the
DNC, so Planned Parenthood had permission from Party and Convention
officials.
Faith and pro-life leaders are
appalled that DNC officials would compare Governor Romney to an STD
and reduce President Obama's Campaign to "gutter
politics."
Leaders also saddened that the
Obama Administration and Planned Parenthood would cheapen and
diminish the fight against STD's with such a shameful and crass
political stunt.
Two questions must be asked of
President Obama. "Are these condoms what he meant by hope and
change?" And, "Who paid for these condoms?"
Rev. Patrick Mahoney, Director
of the Christian Defense Coalition, states,
"It has hard to believe
President Obama, Planned Parenthood and the DNC would resort to
such gutter politics in comparing Governor Romney and Congressman
Ryan to STD's at the Convention.
"It is tragic that the President
and his party will reduce this Presidential campaign to such crass
and extremist levels. This is why so many Americans are turned off
by the political process.
"It is also tragic that the
Democrat Party which helped fight for civil rights and reached out
to the poor and needy across our nation would now stoop to the
level of passing out condoms comparing a Presidential Candidate and
his running mate to STD's. I wonder how Harry Truman or Thomas
Jefferson would feel about this?
"Let me be clear on this, shame
on you President Obama and the DNC. With all the pressing social
issues facing our nation, can you and your party really be taken
seriously after a stunt like this?"
Brandi Swindell, Founder and President of Stanton Healthcare, adds,
"As a woman, human rights
activist and founder of a life-affirming medical clinic, it is
shocking to see Planned Parenthood reduce and diminish the fight
against STD's in such a cheap and crass way. It clearly shows that
they are more interested in creating a circus like atmosphere than
dealing in a serious way with pressing social
issues.
"It also shows that the
President and his party are attached at the hip with Planned
Parenthood and their radical anti-woman agenda. President Obama now
is time for real solutions and not cheap political tricks. Is this
really the best you have to offer our nation?"

Rick Perry Joins Some Republican Presidential Candidates by Signing Pro-Life Pledge
Texas Governor Rick Perry has become
the latest presidential candidate to sign the Susan B. Anthony List
Pro-life Presidential Leadership Pledge. Governor Perry joins
Michele Bachmann, Thad McCotter, Ron Paul, Tim Pawlenty, Rick
Santorum, and Newt Gingrich in committing to be a true leader for
Life in the White House if elected President.
In signing the Pledge, Governor Perry remarked:"I not only
pledge to protect unborn life, but have a record of doing so
in Texas. I have long advocated adoption as an
alternative to abortion in order to protect unborn
children."
Warren, when
pro-life presidential candidates swept the Ames Iowa Straw Poll
earlier this month, the message could not have been anymore clear
to the media, the Republican Party, and the rest of the nation:
Life matters, and only an authentic pro-life leader will be
able to defeat President Obama in 2012. That’s why
we’re going to need all hands on deck in laying the groundwork for
a pro-life victory in 2012.
Will
you start by signing the Pro-life Citizen’s Pledge and then sending
an email to at least 10 of your pro-life family, friends and
neighbors asking them to sign as well?
We’ve got to swell the ranks of the pro-life army if we’re going to
achieve victory next November. Getting another candidate
Pledge-signer is a great step, but now it’s time for the grassroots
to answer the call and sign
the Citizen’s
Pledge.

National Right to Life Committee Urges U.S. House to Reject 'Disclose Act' as 'A Corruption of Power
WASHINGTON,
/Christian Newswire/ -- The National Right to Life Committee
(NRLC), the federation of right-to-life organizations in all 50
states, today urged the U.S. House of Representatives to reject the
"DISCLOSE Act" (H.R. 5175), which it called a "bullying political
power grab," which is "not a curb on corruption, but itself a type
of corruption -- a corruption of the lawmaking process, by which
incumbent lawmakers employ the threat of criminal sanctions, among
other deterrents, to reduce the amount of private speech regarding
the actions of the lawmakers themselves." NRLC said that it would
include the dispositive roll calls on the measure in its scorecard
of key votes for the current Congress.
The four-page letter, signed by NRLC Executive Director David N.
O'Steen and Legislative Director Douglas Johnson, said that the
bill "has been carefully crafted to maximize short-term political
benefits for the dominant faction of one political party, while
running roughshod over the First Amendment protections for
political speech that have been clearly and forcefully articulated
by the U.S. Supreme Court." The letter discusses a number of ways
in which the legislation is designed to "to discourage, as much as
possible, disfavored groups (such as NRLC) from communicating about
officeholders, by exposing citizens who support such efforts to
harassment and intimidation, and by smothering organizations in
layer on layer of record keeping and reporting requirements, all
backed by the threat of civil and criminal sanctions." The letter
suggests that the bill be amended to clarify that "DISCLOSE"
actually stands for "Deterring Independent Speech about Congress
except by Labor Organizations and Selected Elites."
The House Democratic leadership had apparently intended to bring
the bill to the House floor tomorrow (May 28), but -- faced by a
rising chorus of protests from a broad array of organizations --
has now postponed floor action until the week of June 7.
